On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama defeated John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, with 365 electoral vots to McCain`s 173. He had 53% of the popular vote. With this victory, he became the first African American to be elected President of the United States. In his victory speech, Obama proclaimed that 'change has come to America.' Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States at noon EST on January 20, 2009.
